Welcome to Season 2021!

Welcome to Season 2021!

Welcome officially to season 2021.  It’s been such a long time between official games and I know so many of you, along with myself, are looking forward to football returning and the season gets going again.

For many of you it will simply be to catch up with those you hang out with at the football, for others, it’s watching the Mighty Sharks hit the Football field and Netball courts again, and for the players it’s playing alongside that mate again and getting the competitive side of things humming again.  Either way, footy’s back and we cant wait to see you all again.

I wanted to write this report to keep our members up to date with where the club is at and how we are looking heading into the 2021 season.  Along the 2020 COVID year we tried hard to keep you all informed about recruiting, coaching and any developments, but here is an onfield and off-field summary that should update you:

Off-field

– Committee changes: We thanked Ged Hewitt for his tremendous work as our treasurer as he hung up the ‘checks and balances book’ and we welcomed onboard Alex Gielings as our new treasurer on the Executive, as well as Adriana Bonanno as a general member, who will run several portfolios this year.

– Trainers:  We have several changes in the trainers camp but the most important to report is the well transitioned Head training role from Jules Richards to Jo James.  We love Jules very dearly and thank her again for her amazing stewardship of the Head training role for many years now.  Welcome onboard Jo James who is very familiar to so many.  Jo has already grabbed the role with both hands and developed her own team.  It is also great to see Jules stay on as a trainer (she cant quite hang up the dencorub just yet).

– Coaches:  Dennis has progressed into the Head Coaching role for his 3rd year and has been building his coaching team strategically.
2021 Coaching Group:

  • Dennis Armfield – Senior Club Coach
  • Tony Weeks – Senior Assistant
  • Mason Blakey – Midfield Coach
  • Paul Bevan – Backs Coach
  • Andrew Molloy – Senior Reserves Coach
  • Dwayne Johnston – Assistant Coach Reserves

Sponsorships

We are still on the hunt for sponsors to help our club be all that we can be and to achieve the vision we set out for in 2021.  Over the COVID year of 2020, we had so many generous people help the club and our members in so many practical ways.  In 2021 we need small to medium businesses to help us meet budget and kick the massive goals we have set for our future. Please consider becoming a sponsor for the club today.  We have openings for sponsors that range from $1000 a season, $3000, all the way up to $8000.  Please make contact with Rob Purcell: 0417367540, Colin Caulfield 0409047694 or Jeremy Thomas 0409864910.

We once again thank Hoskins Premium Property for their ongoing support as our major club sponsors across all grades of football.  We will do a full update of sponsors for 2021 in the coming weeks as the season progresses.

Domeney Reserve Update

A huge thank you on behalf of the club for the work Colin Caulfield has done to keep the dream alive for our Spiritual Home – Domeney Reserve.

It’s been 10+ years in the making and this year we will get to experience more space and a new home which is exciting for us all.  We will get a full report from Colin in the coming weeks and update us with some pictures of developments so far, but as we sit today, we believe that we should be in by early July and see most of the home games back at Domeney by then.

Thank you for all those who supported the club in the ‘Buy-a-brick’ campaign which will be a great addition to the new facility.

Barman Needed

The Sharks are looking for someone to take control of the bar for 2021 and oversee the gameday set up and pack down of the bar, as well as helping us with finding a weekly team to support this very important role at the Sharks. Please give either Jeremy, Col or Ray if you know someone or you are interested in stepping up to this role for the club.

For now, we look forward to putting all the hard work done off the field over the preseason onto the field as we head towards round one. Get your membership and let’s get behind the Mighty Sharks for 2021. See you at round one – April 10th at Upper Ferntree Gully. Let’s turn up in numbers to see our club start the season well and get a great start in this tight division one competition.

Other Club News

We look forward to reporting on our Netball club in the next fortnight as they start to prepare for their season to start a few weeks after the footy starts.

Our Friday night netball competition is so convenient for our supporters to duck out and support one of our 4 teams this year. We will communicate each week as best we can about the Netball fixture so you can support our girls on a Friday night game each week.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS
